Thekkady is one of the major tourist places in Kerala, every years millions of people visit Thekkady to experience the cool climate and wilderness. Thekkady is  a part of the famous Periyar Wildlife sanctuary, home to one of the most exotic animals on earth the Tiger, which itself makes it a must see tourist spot in Kerala.  Apart from the sightseeing Thekkady offers many activities for the travellers such as  Nature walk or trek with a guide, Periyar Tiger trail trekking, Bamboo rafting, Jungle patrol and overnight stay in jungle inn. All these activities along with the 4o tigers, more than 35 species of mammal, 160 butterfly species, 45 reptile species, 40 species of fish, 265 bird species, 140 species of orchids and countless number of trees makes it one of the best places to visit in Kerala.

 

Mangala Devi Temple 

Mangala Devi is a tourist place in Thekkady, located just 15 km away from the Thekkady town. The temple is built in traditional Kerala style architecture and it is open to public only during the month of April / May, but permission must be obtained from the forest warden of Thekkady.  The area that surrounds the Mangala Devi temple is best for trekking, the top of the hill provides the travelers with panoramic views of the eastern slopes of the Ghats.

 

Kurishumala pilgrimage

Kurishumala is a great place to see in Thekkady, even though it is Christian pilgrimage center, but it is best known for its tree eking trails and magnificent beauty. The stunning views of the mountains and the valleys can be seen from the Kollampattada view point, it also offers the panoramic views of the vast plains in Tamil Nadu state. This tourist spot is best for photography and trekking.

 

Pandikuzhi

Located just five kilometers away from Kumily town Pandikuzhi is a beautiful picnic spot in Thekkady known for the picturesque views, landscape that is best for trekking and also for trekking.

 

Anakkara

Surrounded by the spice gardens and plantations, this less explored tourist spot in Thekkady is 30 minutes’ drive away from the Kumily town.  Chellarkovil, Aruvikkuzhi and Ottakatalamedu are the major tourist places in Anakkara.

 

Vandanmedu cardamom plantations

The cool climate of the Vandanmedu is best for the Cardamom plants, which helped this beautiful tourist place in Thekkady to become the biggest cardamom producer in the world. You can go for trekking or capture some breath taking images of the landscape or just smell the cardamom and do nothing else.

 

Pullumedu

If you can manage to get a permission from the forest department of Kerala, then you will be able to experience this magnificent tourist place in Thekkady.  The Pullumedu view point  is best for trekking and sightseeing tours, it is well known as place to see the ‘Makarajyothi’ a famous Hindu ritual.  If you are lucky enough can get glimpse of some wildlife on your way.

 

Ottakathalmedu view point

Situated at a height of 1400 meters above sea level, this amazing tourist spot in Thekkady gives the panoramic views of the surrounding areas. The hill looks like the head of the camel, hence it has received the name Ottakathalmedu.  Travelers must trek up the hill to see the excellent landscapes that surrounds the hill.

 

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall is located in the Chellarkovil area, the 1200 meter waterfall starts in the state of Kerala and plummets down to Tamil Nadu state. 

 

Artificial lake in Thekkady

 The Mullaperiyar dam has created an artificial lake in Thekkady, it is a major tourist attraction in Thekkady, which often attracts large crowds of travelers from around the world.  This lake is famous due to the fact that it is the best place in Thekkady to see the wild animals without much effort as they often visit the lake to drink the water. Also on the way to the lake travelers can see the wild animals like Deer, fowls, monkeys and other animals.  The tourism department conducts boat cruises through the lake, which is an amazing experience an easy way to see the animals at close range.
