Kottayam is a district in the state of Kerala, India, this destination has many tourist spots. Some of these tourist spots are in the list of must see destinations in Kerala.  Kottayam is blessed with many tourist spots such as hill stations, backwaters, rivers and forest. 

1# Ponthanpuzha forest, a forest in Kottayam best for hiking.

Ponthanpuzha forest reserve is a place to see in Kottayam, the forest starts from Kottayam and extends to the nearby district called Pathanamthitta.  Ponthanpuzha is located 6 Km away from Manimala town, this beautiful destination in Kottayam spans over an area of 7000 acres.  The lush green forest doesn’t have any kind of dangerous animals, which makes it an ideal place for picnics, trekking and family trips. Oottupara is a place to see in Ponthanpuzha, which is the highest point and it gives a panoramic view of the forest and surrounding area. To reach the Ottupara viewpoint travellers must trek through the forest for at least one kilometre.  Ponthanpuzha forest is a beautiful place to see in Kottayam. 

2# Illickal hill or Illickal mala, a destination perfect for trekking and sightseeing.

Illickal hill is a must see destination in Kottayam, this amazing destination has an elevation of 6000 feet above sea level. Illickal hill is located in Vadakkekara, Poonjar a small scenic town in Kottayam.  Illickal hill has many mountains, valleys and grass lands, which makes it an ideal place for trekking and sightseeing. The cool climate and picturesque landscape makes it one of the best tourist spots in Kottayam.  Most daring travellers can trek up to the top of the hill, but trekkers must have to be careful as the climb to the top involves Ninety degree angles. The trekking trail is really narrow, which is less than one feet in some areas and both sides of the trekking trail has valleys that are 4000 feet deep.  A fall here could mean death, so be careful while trekking.  The megalithic rock that rises above the head at an angle of 90 degrees is an amazing sight, the rock is covered in lichens and mosses.  The area is covered in white fog and the cool wind makes it an amazing place to see in Kottayam. 

Vagamon is tourist spot near to Illickal hill , it is located at a distance of 30 kilometres. 

3# Ilaveezha Poonchira, a scenic destination in Kottayam

The Flowery Lake where no leaves falls is the meaning of the name Ilaveezha Poonchira.  Located in the Melukavu village of Kottayam, this amazing hill station is a must see destination in Kottayam.  Located 60 kilometres from Kottayam, Ilaveezha Poonchira attracts many travellers every year. This tourist place in Kottayam has a cool climate and the soft winds make it an ideal destination for the weekend trips.  The valley has a small lake that fills up during the monsoon in Kerala, which increases the beauty of the place. Elaveezha Poonchira is an ideal destination for travellers who likes hiking, photography and sightseeing.  
Caution: Travelers should be careful as there are some reported incidents of theft and rapes of some travellers.  Please enquire in the local police station about the safety and current situation of the place. 

Vagamon is a must see destination in Kerala, which lies close to  Ilaveezha Poonchira  , it is located at a distance of 38 kilometres. ​

4# Kumarakom a backwater destination in Kottayam.

Kumarakom is a beautiful tourist spot in Kottayam, most famous for the seafood menus and backwaters.   Kumarakom, the small village in Kottayam is situated 16 kilometres from the Kottayam town and it is part of the famous Kuttanad, which is another tourist place in Kottayam.  This travel destination is characterized by the unique waterways, canals and green paddy fields, which are the part of the typical Kerala landscape. Travellers can enjoy the boat ride, or can stay in specialized house boats for days munching on to the delicious seafood and Toddy a local alcoholic drink.   The Kumarakom bird sanctuary, home to thousands of local and migratory birds, is a place to see in Kumarakom.  Kumarakom is best for weekend trips, honey moon trips, photography and sightseeing. 
Places to see near Kumarakom includes a 1000 year old Juma Masjid, Pathiramanal Island, Bay Island driftwood museum, Kumarakom lake beach and Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls.
