Thekkady is a hot tourist spot in Kerala, in-fact it is one of the best tourist destinations in Kerala. Located 4 kilometers away from Kumily, Thekkady part of Periyar wildlife sanctuary, is a 777 sq. km Tiger reserve. The artificial lake formed by Mullaperiyar dam attracts a large number of animals during the dry season, boating through the lake provides the travelers an opportunity to see the wild life at close range.  Thekkady is a part of the Periyar national park, home to more than 4o tigers. Apart from that the forest supports more than 35 species of mammal, 160 butterfly species, 45 reptile species, 40 species of fish, 265 bird species, 140 species of orchids and countless number of trees, the forest is a heaven for nature lovers. Thekkady is ideal for trekking, photography tours and family trips with kids and it is a must see destination in Idukki district of Kerala.
