St. Thomas Mount is religious tourist place located in Chennai, it was the place where St. Thomas was martyred. There is also an old church on top of this 76 metre high hill, built by the Portuguese around 1514. One of the interesting artefacts in the church is an old stone cross that the apostle is said to have clutched in his hand while dying and it is named as the Bleeding Cross because of the blood-like stains on the cross and these mystic stains has been found to be too deep to be removed. Another interesting attraction is an oil painting of Madonna that was brought to India by St. Thomas and is believed to be one of the seven that were painted by St. Luke.
