San Thome Cathedral Basilica is historical tourist place to see in Chennai, this stunning church was built by Portuguese people in the 16th century, later the British rebuilt it as a church with the status of a cathedral.
Located at the southern end of the Marina Beach is the San Thome Cathedral Basilica, which got its name from St. Thomas, the apostle of Jesus who is believed to have come to India sometime during 52 AD.
San Thome has many Catholic establishments, which includes 100 year old buildings, garden houses and convents. This area gives the hint of what the Portuguese era would have been like in the 1600s, which makes it one of the beautiful places to visit in Chennai.
San Thome Cathedral Basilica has a museum where all the artefacts related to St. Thomas and the era, have been carefully displayed. The spear that killed the saint is a major attraction in this museum. Inscriptions on stones tell the deeds of St. Thomas and also the two postage stamps that were released.
