Fort St. George is a place to see in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is one of those breath-taking marvels of India, which owes its existence to the British Empire. This bastion derived its name from St. George, the patron saint of England and is the first English fortress in India. The State Legislature and the Secretariat are located inside this fort.
Some of the other attractions inside the Fort St. George includes ; St. Mary’s Church, Museum and Flag staff. St. Mary’s Church was completed in 1680 it is the oldest Anglican Church in India with the oldest tombstones of some of the British officials of that time.
The Museum, which was originally the Madras Bank, is now home to some of the oldest British weapons, coins, medals and uniforms on display as well as artefacts from Scotland, France and India.
The Flag Staff, which stands at a height of 150 feet tall, is noted as the tallest flag staff in the country.
The Fort St. George Museum is open from 9AM to 5PM, throughout the week, expect on Fridays. There is an entry fee of 5 INR for Indians and 100 INR for foreigners.
